Sentinel Keys by SafeNet, Inc. is a software licensing and copy protection solution that uses hardware-based security keys (USB dongles and legacy parallel-port keys) and accompanying system drivers to authenticate and manage licensed applications. It installs a lightweight runtime service (often listed as “Sentinel Keys”) that enables protected software to detect a valid key locally or over a network, enforce feature-based entitlements, control concurrent usage, and receive secure license updates. Software publishers use Sentinel Keys to help prevent unauthorized use, support trials and subscriptions, and simplify license distribution to end users.
Key capabilities:
For end users, the software typically runs in the background. If an application reports that a Sentinel key is not found, installing the Sentinel drivers or connecting the appropriate hardware key usually resolves the issue.
